So, berry season. On the left, brand new Santa Cruz Tallboy, just came out a couple weeks ago. I wrote a first ride on it with some impressions. You can read all about that on pinkbike.com, and you can read about two dozen comments about how similar it looked to the 2020 Norco Optic. Here it is right here. They do look fairly similar, both horse link short travel bikes with um kind of do-it-all geometry. We gave the Optic bike of the year back when it was released, and it holds up. But, we want to see just how similar it is, in fact, to the Tallboy. So, I went on the buy sell. I found a guy who was selling an extra large Optic in the area, convinced him to let us borrow it for the day. We're out here to ride them back-to-back on the same trail and see how similar and how different they really are. They are really, really similar on paper. Uh I'm riding an extra large on both bikes. The reach on the Tallboy is 495 mil. The reach on the Optic is 510. So, that's one of the bigger differences, slightly longer reach on the Optic, a little bit shorter on the Tallboy. The head angle across the two is identical within like 0.1 degree. So, really, really similar steering angle. The stack heights are a bit different. The Santa Cruz is taller, the Norco is a bit shorter, but both are within what I'd call like a normal range. Uh The seat tube angles are pretty different. The Tallboy is 77.5, and the Optic is 76 degrees. So, slacker on the Optic, a bit more upright on the Tallboy. And then, I think that will make a meaningful difference in terms of the top tube length, cuz the longer reach on the optic will kind of like double that feeling. Bottom bracket drop is very similar between the two, though the Tallboy's is adjustable. And then looking at the chainstay length, it's identical, 440 mm on both bikes. So, they are really really similar. There are going to be some subtle differences in the geo feel, but ultimately this is probably more of a test of like frame feeling, the kinematics. Obviously the components are different. I'll try to ignore that. I think this is going to be cool. I'm curious to see how different they actually do feel, and I will report back shortly. All right, first impressions while climbing here. It's definitely a long feeling bike while you're seated, even while you're standing up. Like the reach is out there, and then the stack is kind of low compared to what I'm used to right now, but you know, this is an older XL kind of from the moment when long really really long reaches were in vogue, so you had people I'd say experimenting maybe. You know, like even the next generation of optic, the high pivot one, got shorter in reach, so it's kind of an interesting little detail. That said, it's it's comfy, pedals really well. Feels like super firm underneath you, maybe more feedback than some bikes, but we'll see how it compares to the And I'm going to stop the camera. I don't need to clap, but I'm clapping. All right, it's kind of similar to the climb. The optic feels really uh long. Like more than I would have guessed based on looking at it on paper. It rides nicely though. I would say you know, it has a maybe a springier feel to it if I'm characterizing it overall. It's got a lot of ramp in the shock, quite a bit to push into, but nice on bigger hits like that. Oh. Talking a bit more about suspension as I go through the mud. Oh, this is so muddy. Sorry, buddy. You're getting your bike all dirty. The bike is very progressive feeling in the way that it like pushes you forward at the end of travel. I don't know how else to describe that. Getting into some more like flowy jumpy stuff. Um one thing I am noticing is the dropper post is kind of short on this bike. It's, you know, obviously have more of a build detail than anything. Wow, it has the same pop on that. That was fun. It is, you know, a little more old school feeling in that sense, but only slightly. Like And I just mean that you can't run a 240 post. The bike is very responsive like pumping, you know, generating speed through corners, but does have a pretty smooth feel once you get deeper into travel. I think the Tallboy might edge it out there. Oh, boy. The uh weirdness in kind of corners like that mostly just comes down to geometry, I think. Yeah, it feels like I'm kind of out over the front of the bike a bit more. It jumps really nicely, though. Oh! Initial thoughts on the Optic, it feels pretty damn good. It's like a lot of my complaints probably just come down to setup things, and that's why this isn't a perfect test, but uh you know, it's lively. It feels more comfortable suspension-wise than I expected. Yeah, it's been a while since I've ridden this bike, and I kind of remember it being a bit um firmer feeling. The Geo is a bit funky. Like it feels really long. The last size of this I rode is a large, so the XL is pretty long, pretty big. But I'm getting along with it well. It feels really good on like flowier jumpy stuff. It's just in the rough that it starts to buck you around a bit. That's all.
